About This Ebook

“Beowulf,” a classic from the Anglo-Saxon period, is set in Scandinavia. The poem narrates the heroic deeds of Beowulf in his youth: he aids King Hrothgar of Denmark by defeating the monstrous Grendel and then Grendel’s vengeful mother. Later, Beowulf returns to his homeland and eventually becomes king. In the fiftieth year of his reign, a dragon guarding a treasure hoard wreaks havoc after one of its treasures is stolen. Despite his age, King Beowulf courageously confronts the dragon to protect his people. Though he succeeds in slaying the dragon, he sustains fatal injuries and dies a hero’s death. This epic not only portrays the spirit of heroism but also reflects the values, beliefs, and cultural characteristics of the society at that time.
